Limited register vs main register
One of the questions that comes up quite often is the difference between Main and Limited Register, and more importantly — how we decide where each puppy goes.
Within Dogs Australia there are two types of registration. Main Register allows a dog to be shown and used for breeding. Limited Register is for pet homes, without breeding or conformation showing.
In our program, puppies are placed on the Limited Register first and foremost when they are not ideal from a breed standard perspective. In about 90% of cases, that simply means a small white marking. It doesn’t affect the dog’s health, temperament or quality as a companion in any way, but according to the Poodle standard only solid colours are accepted. So those charming little white spots automatically make a dog unsuitable for show and breeding from a standard point of view.
In other cases, a puppy may simply not be particularly outstanding when assessed against the breed standard, or may fall outside the desired size range — either smaller or larger than what we aim for. That doesn’t make them any less loved or any less wonderful as a dog — it just means they are not the right candidate for the show ring or for a breeding program.
If a puppy looks particularly promising, it will usually stay with us to grow on. Later, it may remain in our program, go to a carefully selected show home, or — if it doesn’t turn out to be a “star” as it matures — it will also be placed on the Limited Register and find a family where it will be loved and spoiled without any expectations around showing.
It’s also important to say that Limited Register does not mean a dog is limited in life. We strongly encourage owners to explore dog sports — whether it’s rally obedience (rally-o), agility, tracking or lure coursing. Regardless of registration, these dogs can compete, stay active and, most importantly, enjoy themselves.
As breeders, we only plan litters that are genuinely interesting to us, with the goal of improving the breed and producing quality representatives of both type and colour. We don’t place dogs “for breeding” as such. However, we do work with people who are willing to show their dogs and/or be involved in sports, and who are open to collaboration.
We are also working very deliberately to develop red and apricot Toy Poodles in Australia to a level that can stand confidently in international competition. Because of that, we are careful about where our lines go — we don’t want that work diluted through indiscriminate breeding without clear goals or understanding.
For that reason, the Limited Register is not a “restriction” — it’s an essential tool. It allows breeders to ensure that dogs who are not intended for breeding are not used in programs, while still being fully registered, traceable and part of the official system. Most importantly, it helps maintain the overall quality of the breed by keeping breeding decisions intentional and controlled, rather than random.
